Beneath the Surface: Rima’s Dive Liveaboard in Thailand
By Rima Dmitriew, PADI Certified DiverAfter touring Thailand, Rima flew solo to Phuket for a 5-day, 4-night dive liveaboard through the Similan Islands National Park in the Andaman Sea.
- Dive sites: Koh Bon, Koh Tachai, Richelieu Rock and the Boon Sung Wreck
- Life onboard: 4 to 5 dives a day, including night dives, with gear set up once
- When to go: the park is open roughly mid-October to mid-May, with the best chance of mantas and whale sharks from December to April
- Going solo: the crew paired Rima with a dive buddy and grouped divers by skill level
No whale sharks on her trip? “Well… now I have a reason to come back.”

Quick answers from our PADI certified dive team.
Do I need to be certified to dive on vacation?
Not to try it. Many dive resorts offer an introductory try dive with an instructor in shallow water. To dive on your own with a buddy, you’ll need an entry-level certification such as PADI Open Water Diver. You can often do the theory online at home and finish your training dives at your destination.
How long should I wait to fly after diving?
Common dive safety guidelines recommend waiting at least 12 hours after a single dive and at least 18 hours after repetitive dives or multiple days of diving before you fly. We build that no-fly time into your plan, usually with a non-diving last day.
Do I need dive insurance?
We recommend it. Many regular travel insurance policies exclude scuba diving or limit the depth they cover. Dive-specific coverage can include things like hyperbaric chamber treatment and emergency evacuation. We’ll help you check what your policy covers before you go.
When is the best time to dive the Caribbean?
You can dive the Caribbean all year, but hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk usually from August to October. Some destinations, like Bonaire, sit outside the main hurricane belt. We’ll match your dates to the right destination.
