Ocean Cruise FAQs
How do I choose the right cruise line?
Start with who’s travelling and the kind of trip you want. Some lines are lively and family-focused, some are adults-only, and others are calm and destination-focused. Your budget, travel dates and where you’d like to sail matter too. A Travitude Travel Group travel consultant can compare lines, ships and itineraries side by side for you.
What’s included in an ocean cruise fare?
Most fares include your stateroom, meals in the main dining room and buffet, onboard entertainment and many activities. Specialty restaurants, drink packages, Wi-Fi, shore excursions and gratuities are often extra, although some lines, like Virgin Voyages, Viking and Silversea, include more of these in the fare.
Which cruise lines are best for families?
Carnival, Norwegian, MSC, Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean® are all popular with families, thanks to kids’ clubs, pools, waterslides and family-friendly staterooms. Celebrity Cruises® is a great fit for families who want a more relaxed feel. If you’re travelling without kids, adults-only lines like Virgin Voyages and Viking offer a quieter atmosphere.
How far ahead should I book a cruise?
Booking early gives you the best choice of ships, dates and staterooms, especially for school holidays, summer in Alaska, suites and family cabins, which tend to sell out first. Last-minute deals do pop up, but the choice of cabins is usually much smaller.
Do I need a passport to go on a cruise?
Yes. Canadians must travel with a valid passport, and we recommend it be valid for at least six months past your return date. Some destinations only require three months, but six months is the safest rule of thumb. Even on cruises that start and end in the same port, a passport makes it much easier if you need to fly home early or there’s an emergency in a foreign port. Check your expiry date before you book, since a renewal can take several weeks.
Does it cost more to book with a travel agent?
No. Your cruise fare is the same as booking directly with the cruise line, and we can often add perks like onboard credit or group offers. If you’d like us to book your flights along with your cruise, there’s no extra charge for that either. A Travitude Travel Group travel consultant handles the details for you, from choosing the right stateroom to flights, hotels and travel insurance.
Do I need travel insurance for a cruise?
We strongly recommend it. Medical care at sea or in a foreign port can be very expensive, and insurance can also protect your cruise if you have to cancel or cut your trip short. You can get a Manulife travel insurance quote online or ask your travel consultant for help.
Cruise line features and inclusions vary by ship, itinerary and fare, and are subject to change.
