Solo Travel FAQs

What is a single supplement, and can I avoid it?

A single supplement is the extra fee some hotels, cruises and tours charge when one person stays in a room priced for two. You can often avoid or reduce it by booking solo-friendly options. Examples include Norwegian Cruise Line’s Solo Studios and Transat’s Solo Collection with no single supplement, or escorted tours built for solo travellers like Just You.

Is solo travel safe?

For most destinations, yes, especially with a bit of planning. Guided tours, cruises and small-group trips give you built-in support, and your travel consultant can recommend solo-friendly destinations and hotels. It’s also smart to share your itinerary with someone at home and register your trip with the Government of Canada’s Registration of Canadians Abroad service.

What’s the best kind of trip for a first-time solo traveller?

Cruises, escorted tours and small-group adventures are great places to start, because transportation and many meals are taken care of. You’ll also have a ready-made group to share the experience with. If you’d like company, you can also join one of our hosted group trips.

Will I be the only solo traveller on a group tour?

Probably not! Many small-group tour companies welcome a lot of solo travellers, and some trips are just for people travelling on their own. Your travel consultant can recommend tours where you’ll fit right in.

Do I need travel insurance when I travel solo?

We strongly recommend it. When you’re on your own, having medical and trip interruption coverage gives you extra peace of mind. Learn more in our Understanding Travel Insurance blog, or ask your travel consultant for help.
