Cruising combines the best of both worlds — the adventure of exploring multiple ports with all the comfort and convenience of a floating resort at your fingertips.

Arrive Early for Peace of Mind

Here’s our number one piece of advice: if you’re flying to your embarkation port, plan to arrive at least one full day before your cruise departs. We can’t stress this enough!

Flight delays are incredibly common. Weather systems roll through, mechanical issues pop up, and air traffic gets backed up. And here’s the thing: your ship has a schedule to keep and simply can’t wait for late arrivals. We’ve seen too many heartbroken travelers miss their cruise entirely because of a delayed connection.

By arriving the day before, you’re giving yourself a buffer that transforms potential panic into peace of mind. Plus, you’ll actually get to enjoy your port city! Spend the afternoon exploring, grab a great dinner, and wake up refreshed and ready to board without that rushed, anxious feeling.

Returning Home: Timing Is Everything

Just as important as your arrival is planning your departure. When you’re booking your flight home, choose one that leaves after 12:00 pm, and honestly, later is even better if your schedule allows.

Why? Ships can occasionally be delayed docking due to weather or port traffic. Customs and immigration can take longer than expected. And disembarkation, even when everything runs smoothly, involves thousands of passengers trying to leave at once. It’s not unusual for the process to take a few hours.

Once you’re off the ship, you still need to factor in travel time to the airport. For international flights, you should arrive at least three hours before departure; for domestic flights, give yourself two hours minimum. And don’t forget about traffic! Morning rush hour in port cities can be brutal.

Here’s what we tell our clients: build in buffer time. The stress of potentially missing your flight home isn’t worth the savings of an earlier departure.

Consider Extending Your Stay

If your schedule is flexible, we highly recommend spending one more night in your disembarkation port. You can book a late afternoon or evening flight, or even stay overnight and fly out the next morning.

This approach gives you a wonderfully relaxed end to your vacation. Many port cities offer luggage storage services, so you can drop your bags and spend the day exploring without dragging everything around. It’s a lovely way to decompress and transition back to regular life. Plus, you might discover a new favourite city!

Are Drink Packages Worth It?

This is one of the most common cruise questions — and the answer is, it depends. Cruise lines typically require both guests in a stateroom to purchase the same drink package, with non-alcoholic options for minors.

To truly get your money’s worth, you’d need to drink around 6–7 alcoholic beverages per day. If that doesn’t sound like you, it’s usually more economical to pay per drink.

Excursions: To Book or Not to Book

One of the beautiful things about cruising is the flexibility it offers. You absolutely don’t need to book an organized excursion in every single port, and doing so can actually be exhausting!

Some destinations are perfect for independent exploration. Maybe you just want a relaxing beach day, or perhaps you’d prefer wandering through local markets and cafés at your own pace. That’s completely okay! Not every port requires a structured activity.

That said, certain experiences are truly worth booking. Snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, guided cultural tours with knowledgeable locals, or adventure activities like zip-lining can create those unforgettable vacation moments you’ll treasure forever.

Our advice? Mix and match based on your interests, energy level, and budget. Choose excursions for ports where you really want expert guidance or special access, and leave other days open for spontaneous exploring.

Prepay Your Gratuities

Yes, we absolutely recommend prepaying your gratuities before you sail. Let’s explain why this matters, especially for our Canadian clients.

If your cruise fare is priced in Canadian dollars and you prepay your gratuities, they’re locked in at that same exchange rate. However, if you wait to pay onboard, those gratuities will be charged in U.S. dollars. With current exchange rates, that difference can add up to a noticeable amount — money that could be better spent on a special dinner or a souvenir you’ll actually love.

Beyond the financial benefit, there’s an important human element here. The crew members who make your cruise special, including your stateroom attendant, dining room servers, and behind-the-scenes staff, count on gratuities as a significant part of their income. Prepaying ensures they’re fairly compensated for their hard work.

And here’s the thing: prepaying doesn’t mean you can’t show extra appreciation! If someone goes above and beyond during your cruise, you can always add additional cash tips onboard. It’s always appreciated.
