Quick takeaways

  • Dreams Onyx is a big, all-inclusive resort in Uvero Alto, about 45 minutes from the Punta Cana airport.
  • It’s a fantastic fit for families, friends and couples, with a waterpark, a lazy river, lots of pools and kids’ and teens’ clubs.
  • The à la carte restaurants don’t need reservations, and the food (hello, taco truck!) is a big highlight.
  • Guests 18 and up can also use Breathless Punta Cana, the adults-only resort right next door!

I absolutely LOVE Dreams Onyx! I’ve stayed there twice now, so it’s one of those resorts I can tell you about first hand, from the rooms to the pools to which restaurant to hit first. If you’re looking for an all-inclusive in Punta Cana that works for just about everyone (families, friends, couples), this is one I recommend again and again.

Why I keep going back

My most recent stay was a tropical escape with my two boys to start off the new year in January 2024, and it was the perfect way to kick things off! We had a short stay, but we packed in so much: the water slides, the lazy river, the beach, and a LOT of tacos.

What keeps me coming back is that there really is something for everyone. The kids can spend all day at the waterpark, the adults can relax by the pool or the beach, and everyone comes together for great food at night. And because the adults (18+) can also use Breathless Punta Cana right next door, you basically get two resorts in one!

It’s a favourite of mine for a reason!

Location and getting there

Dreams Onyx Resort & Spa sits on the beach in Uvero Alto, a quieter area north of the busy Bávaro hotel zone. The transfer from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is about 45 minutes. It’s a little farther than some resorts, but once you’re there, you won’t want to leave!

It’s a large resort with more than 800 suites, so pack your comfy sandals. There’s lots of walking between the pools, beach and restaurants.

The rooms

Every suite has a private terrace with a hot tub. On our last stay, we were in a Premium Junior Suite, Pool View. These rooms are larger than the standard junior suites and are close to the waterslides and lazy river, which is perfect for families. They can sleep up to 5 people (a maximum of 3 adults and 2 kids 12 and under). And yes, the two beds are queens, even though they look like doubles in photos!

Other room options to know about:

  • Junior Suites with garden, pool or ocean views
  • Swim-out suites, where you step right off your terrace into the pool
  • Preferred Club suites, an upgrade with a private lounge, private pools and extra perks
  • Two-bedroom family suites for bigger families travelling together

Amy’s tipIf you’re travelling with kids, the Premium Junior Suite Pool View is my pick. The extra space makes a big difference, and you’re steps from the slides and lazy river!

Pools, slides and the lazy river

This is where Dreams Onyx really shines! The Jungle Waterpark has water slides and a long, winding lazy river surrounded by gardens. There’s an infinity pool that looks out over the ocean, quieter pools for relaxing, and a pool for the little ones too.

Some of the slides have age and height minimums, so check with the lifeguards before the kids line up. The pools get lively in the afternoon with music, so if you want a quiet spot, head to the beach or one of the smaller pools.

Photos are great, but videos really show you how beautiful the pools are! Here’s a walk past the pools and waterpark, and the view over the slides:

The beach

The beach is a beautiful stretch of soft white sand lined with palm trees, beach beds and palapas. Uvero Alto is on the open Atlantic side, so there are usually waves. That makes it great for boogie boarding and body surfing! If you’re dreaming of calm, glassy water, I’d point you to the south side of the island instead, like La Romana.

Food and drinks

The food at Dreams Onyx is so good! With Dreams’ all-inclusive plan you get gourmet à la carte dining with no reservations needed, plus unlimited top-shelf drinks. The resort has a buffet, a variety of à la carte restaurants (think Italian, Mexican, French, Asian and a steakhouse), a beach grill, a coffee café and an ice cream shop. There are plenty of bars too, including a swim-up bar on the lazy river.

And then there’s my personal favourite: the taco truck! Hands down the best taco truck ever. We went back more times than I’d like to admit!

Amy’s tipSome of the restaurants have a dress code at dinner (like long pants for the guys), so pack at least one nicer outfit for the evenings.

Kids and teens

Dreams Onyx has an Explorer’s Club for kids ages 3 to 12 and a Core Zone Teens Club for ages 13 to 17, with activities throughout the day. Add in the waterpark and the lazy river, and this is a resort where the kids are entertained from morning to night. My boys never ran out of things to do!

Access to Breathless Punta Cana next door

Here’s a bonus I love! Anyone 18 and up staying at Dreams Onyx also has access to Breathless Punta Cana, the adults-only resort right next door. That means more restaurants, bars, pools and entertainment, just a short walk away.

The food at Breathless was really great. We enjoyed breakfast there, and it was a nice change of scenery! And the glow party was SO much fun. It’s the perfect option for a parents’ night out or for friends travelling together.

A few things to know: the Xhale Club areas at Breathless are just for Breathless club guests, and spa treatments cost extra. I did a full site inspection of Breathless, so check out my Breathless Punta Cana blog for all the details!

My tips for Dreams Onyx

  • Book a pool view room if you have kids. Being close to the slides and lazy river is a game changer.
  • Bring water shoes or sandals for the beach. With the waves, they’re handy for getting in and out of the water.
  • Plan a night (or breakfast!) at Breathless if you have adults 18+ in your group.
  • Don’t skip the taco truck. Trust me on this one!
  • Book early for holidays. Christmas, New Year’s and March Break fill up fast at this resort.

Ready to plan your Dreams Onyx getaway? I’ve been there twice, so ask me all the questions! We’d love to help you pick the right room, find great flights and get everything booked so all you have to do is relax.
