What do Canadians need to travel to Costa Rica?
Canadians don’t need a visa for a vacation in Costa Rica. Canadians must travel with a valid passport, and we recommend it be valid for at least six months past your return date. Some destinations only require three months, but six months is the safest rule of thumb. You’ll also need proof of your return or onward flight, and Costa Rica’s US$29 departure tax is usually included in your airfare. Your travel consultant will remind you before you fly.
Which airport should I fly into?
For the Guanacaste beach resorts, fly direct from Toronto to Liberia (LIR), about 5 hours. Most Papagayo and Playa Conchal resorts are 30 minutes to an hour away. For Arenal, Monteverde or Manuel Antonio, San José (SJO) is usually the better choice.
Which Costa Rica resorts are best for families or couples?
Families love The Westin Reserva Conchal for its lagoon pool, kids’ club and golf, and Riu Palace Costa Rica is a great-value pick on Playa Matapalo. Couples will love Secrets Papagayo, an adults-only resort on the Papagayo Peninsula.
When is the best time to visit Costa Rica?
The dry season, from December to April, brings sunny days and the best beach weather. The green season, from May to November, is lush and quieter, with afternoon showers and great value. Guanacaste is the driest region, and September and October are the rainiest months on the Pacific side. We recommend travel insurance for every trip.

Can I mix a beach resort with rainforest adventures?
Absolutely! From Guanacaste you can visit Rincón de la Vieja for waterfalls, hot springs and ziplining, or add a few nights near Arenal Volcano. Your travel consultant can plan excursions or a two-stop trip for you.
What currency is used in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica uses the colón, but US dollars are accepted almost everywhere in tourist areas, and hotels take major credit cards. Tipping policies vary by resort, so ask your travel consultant what to expect at yours.
