Accessible Travel Planning Guides
Practical tips to help you plan with confidence, from flying with a mobility device to choosing the right cabin and protecting your trip.
Plan Smarter
A few simple steps before you travel can make a big difference once you’re on your way. Here are the tips we share most often with our clients.
Flying With a Wheelchair or Scooter
Airlines need to know about your mobility device ahead of time, especially if it’s powered.
- Tell the airline about your device when you book
- Have the battery type, size and weight of your device handy, as lithium batteries have special rules
- Request wheelchair assistance for check-in, connections and arrival
- Ask whether your device will be returned at the aircraft door or at baggage claim
- Take photos of your device and carry removable parts, like cushions and controllers, on board
Choosing an Accessible Cruise Cabin
Accessible staterooms are not all the same, and there are only a limited number on each ship.
- Ask about door widths, turning space, bed height and roll-in showers
- Check for a ramp or level threshold to the balcony
- Choose a location close to the elevators
- Book early, as accessible staterooms sell out quickly
- Review which ports use tenders before you choose your itinerary
Travel Insurance With a Health Condition
Travel insurance is a must, and it’s especially important when you have a health condition or travel with equipment.
- Answer the medical questions completely and honestly
- Check the stability period required for pre-existing conditions
- Make sure your mobility equipment is covered if it’s lost or damaged
- Consider trip cancellation and interruption coverage
Packing & Preparing
A little preparation goes a long way when you’re travelling with equipment, medications, food allergies or other specific needs.
- Pack medications in their original containers in your carry-on, with a few extra days’ supply
- Bring a list of your medications and a letter from your doctor
- If you have food allergies, keep your epinephrine auto-injectors with you, plus a translated allergy card and safe snacks for travel days
- Pack chargers, plug adapters and spare parts for your equipment
- Label your equipment with your name and contact information
- Arrange accessible transportation at your destination before you arrive
