Castaway Cay
– Disney’s Private Island –

Written by Barbara Durley, Travel & Cruise Consultant at Travitude Travel Group

For those who know me, it is no secret that my family and I love Disney, and we love cruising. So it is not surprising that most of the cruises we have done are on Disney Ships. And can I just say that Disney cruises are by far the best!

All of our Disney Cruises have included a visit to Disney’s private island Castaway Cay which is nestled in the crystal-clear waters of the Bahamas. Whether you are looking for a tropical escape, a family-friendly beach adventure, or just a day to recharge with some sun and sea, Castaway Cay offers a magical Disney version of paradise.

So what exactly is Castaway Cay? Well, first, it is pronounced Castaway key – I know, it takes some getting use to. Castaway Cay is a 1,000-acre island leased by Disney from the Bahamian government. While only about 55 acres are developed for visitor use, what’s there is immaculately maintained and purpose-built for Disney Cruise Line guests. The island has been transformed into a lush, welcoming port complete with pristine beaches, family amenities, and character-filled entertainment.

Disney cruises has done what Disney does best. They have created an immersive, laid-back environment that blends the tropical charm of the Bahamas with the polished storytelling and world-class service they are known for. You never know what Characters you will meet.

As your ship docks directly at Castaway Cay. This means no tender boats needed which can be a huge plus. The first thing you’ll notice is the vibrant colors, cheerful cast members, and amazing beach views that stretch as far as the eye can see. Unlike some bustling cruise ports, Castaway Cay feels peaceful and uncrowded.

Once you are off the ship, you can choose to take a quick tram ride to the main areas or the island, or you can walk along the scenic path, enjoy the ocean breeze and beautiful lush landscape.

So, the next obvious question is, what can I do at Castaway Cay? Honestly, there is so much to do. Let’s start with the shops. There are 2 shops on Castaway Cay, so if you forgot your sun screen, blew a flip flop or just want to grab a souvenir from the island, have no fear, Disney has you covered. No need to bring cash, you can charge your purchases to your room using your key to the world card!

If you are hungry while you are hanging out on the island you can find BBQ Buffets – with self serve ice cream just like on the ship – in 3 locations. Cookie’s BBQ is located near the Family Beach, Cookie’s Too is near Pelican Point and Serenity Bay BBQ is in the Adults only area.

The Castaway Family Beach is the area most people hang out. This area offers soft white sand, calm lagoon waters, and plenty of shaded lounge chairs. This area is perfect for families to swim, play, and relax. There are beach games, a floating playground, and convenient access to food, drinks, and restrooms. We have always enjoyed checking out the fish and sea shells at the beach. And of course playing in the water park!

You can also bring, or rent gear to go snorkeling in the Snorkeling Lagoon, located just off the Family Beach. The clear, shallow waters are perfect for beginners, but even seasoned snorkelers will enjoy the underwater surprises Disney has hidden beneath the surface—like submerged statues of Mickey and Minnie! There are two trails to follow: one for beginners and a longer one for more experienced snorkelers. You can spot colorful fish, coral, and maybe even a sea turtle or two.

For an unforgettable wildlife encounter, book the Castaway Ray’s Stingray Adventure. We did this the first time we visited Castaway Cay when Kirsten was 9. This experience was so much fun! You feed and snorkel with gentle southern stingrays in a protected lagoon. There are some Disney cast members that teach you about stingray behavior and conservation before you step into shallow waters to hand-feed them a custom made jello like food.

After feeding time, you’ll get to snorkel alongside them. It was a truly magical experience. I would recommend this for families with kids aged 5 and up. I don’t have any photos since we didn’t have a waterproof camera with us.

Kirsten always wanted to hang out with us at the island but, Scuttle’s Cove is Castaway Cay’s fully supervised kids’ club, designed for children aged 3 to 12. Run by the same trained Disney Youth Counselors who work on the ship, this sandy, fenced-in play area features games, water play, treasure hunts, and character visits.

If you are looking for a chance to explore the adult-only parts of the Disney cruise island (like Serenity Bay) this is a great place to drop off your kids. The kids will have a blast in a safe environment while you enjoy some adult time.

Pro tip: Drop-off and pick-up work just like on the ship using your Key to the World card, and Castaway Cay has a designated area for each age group’s activities.

Speaking of Adult time, Serenity Bay is the adults-only beach, open to guests 18 and up. Located on the far side of the island (accessible by tram or bike), Serenity Bay lives up to its name with peaceful surroundings, fewer people, and stunning ocean views.

There’s also a dedicated beach bar and a lunch buffet that often features extras like grilled steak in addition to the usual barbecue fare. Spa treatments are also available in open-air cabanas for an added touch of indulgence.

Kirsten always hung out with us so I haven’t had a chance to explore this area. We will check it out this August since she’s 19 now!

If you are looking to explore, Castaway Cay has miles of paved paths and scenic trails that are perfect for biking, and rentals are available right on the island. It’s a great way to explore hidden corners of the island, including a secluded observation tower that offers panoramic views of the beaches, ships, and surrounding sea. And don’t worry, there are lots of signs around the island to direct you to the next place you want to visit!

You can also run or walk the Castaway Cay 5K, a fun and casual race that takes place most mornings when the ship docks—perfect for cruisers looking to stay active. We actually did this twice! Fair warning, if you are sailing in August like we did, it is really hot on the island even though the walk is done first thing in the morning. Remember to bring some water!

Tips for Making the Most of Your Disney Cruise

· Arrive early: The earlier you get off the ship, the better your chances of getting the best beach spots or early time slots for activities.

· Pack smart: Bring reef-safe sunscreen, flip-flops, water shoes, and a waterproof phone pouch.

· Reserve ahead: Popular activities like cabana rentals and stingray feeding excursions book up quickly—reserve them through the Disney Cruise Line website or app before your trip.

· Use the tram: It’s free, frequent, and saves energy on hot days.

· Keep your Key to the World card with you at all times—it’s how you check in for activities and make purchases on the island.

Castaway Cay is more than just a beach stop—it’s an immersive experience designed to help families, couples, and solo travelers make lasting memories. Whether you’re snorkeling with tropical fish, biking past palm trees, feeding stingrays, or watching your kids laugh in the splash zone at Scuttle’s Cove, every moment feels touched by a little Disney magic.

For many cruisers, a day at Castaway Cay is the highlight of their entire vacation—and it’s not hard to see why. Once you’ve been, you’ll likely find yourself dreaming about returning to this slice of paradise again and again.
