Understanding travel insurance

Let’s Talk About Travel Insurance And Why It Really Matters

We know! Travel insurance isn’t the most exciting part of planning your dream vacation. When you’re daydreaming about sandy beaches or exploring ancient ruins, the last thing you want to think about is insurance paperwork. But here’s the thing: we’ve been doing this for a long time, and have seen too many heartbreaking situations where a simple insurance policy would have saved someone thousands of dollars and a whole lot of stress.

So let us take a few minutes to walk you through this. We promise to keep it straightforward and helpful, because our goal isn’t to sell you something you don’t need. Our goal is to make sure you understand what you’re protecting and why it matters.

Your Trip Is a Big Investment

Let’s start with the obvious: travel isn’t cheap. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, a family adventure, or that bucket-list trip you’ve been saving for, you’re investing a significant amount of your hard-earned money. And unlike most things you buy, trips come with a lot of moving parts and a lot of things that can go wrong—before you leave, while you’re traveling, and even on your way home.

That’s where travel insurance comes in. It’s your financial safety net.

Yet we see so many people decline it without really understanding what they’re turning down. Sometimes it’s because they’re trying to save money. Sometimes they just don’t realize what’s actually covered. And sometimes they think they’re already protected through work or their credit card. We’ll get to that in a bit.

Timing Is Everything: The 72-Hour Window

Here’s something really important that most people don’t know: the best time to purchase travel insurance is within 72 hours of making your initial deposit on your trip.

Why does this matter so much? Because buying within that window gives you access to the most comprehensive policy with the best coverage options available. It also unlocks something called “Cancel for Any Reason” coverage, which can reimburse you for up to 80% of your trip cost if you need to cancel for a reason that isn’t on the standard covered list.

Now, if you’ve already missed that 72-hour window, don’t panic. You can absolutely still purchase a policy. The coverage will just be slightly different, and your “Cancel for Any Reason” reimbursement would typically be around 50% instead of 80%.

We always encourage clients to think about insurance right when they’re booking, not as an afterthought. It’s when you get the most protection for your investment.

Wait—What About the “Insurance” My Tour Operator Offers?

Great question, and we are so glad you asked because this confuses a lot of people.

If your tour provider offers “insurance,” you need to read the fine print carefully. Unless it’s actually through a licensed insurance company, what they’re offering is typically a protection plan, not true insurance. There’s a big difference.

Tour operator protection plans usually allow you to change your travel dates, or destination, or cancel your trip within a certain timeframe before departure. Each company’s protection plan is different, so you really need to review their specific terms and conditions to understand if you’d get a refund or just a travel credit.

Here’s what tour operator protection plans typically don’t include:

  • Trip interruption coverage
  • Emergency medical coverage when you’re out of the country
  • Lost or delayed baggage coverage
  • Any of the other benefits that come with actual travel insurance

So while these protection plans can be helpful for basic flexibility, they’re not a substitute for comprehensive travel insurance. Think of them as two different things that serve different purposes.

Understanding Cancellation Insurance

Now let’s dive into what actual travel insurance covers, starting with cancellation insurance.

Cancellation insurance protects you from the moment you purchase your policy until the moment you leave your home to start your trip. The cost of this insurance is based on two things: the total cost of your trip and your age.

This type of coverage is designed to protect you from unexpected events that would force you to cancel your trip. There are 27 specific covered reasons that would allow you to file a claim and receive a full refund for your non-refundable trip costs. These covered reasons include things like:

  • Sudden illness or injury, whether yours or a family member’s
  • Death in the family
  • Unexpected job loss
  • Jury duty
  • Your home becoming uninhabitable due to fire, flood, or natural disaster
  • And many other unforeseen circumstances

But here’s where it gets interesting. What if you need to cancel for a reason that isn’t on that list of 27? Maybe you just don’t feel comfortable traveling anymore, or something came up that’s important to you but doesn’t fit the covered categories.

That’s where “Cancel for Any Reason” coverage comes in.

This option doesn’t give you a full refund, but it does give you back a significant portion of your trip cost. If you purchase the Manulife Premium Protection Plan within 72 hours of your deposit, you can get up to 80% back. With other policies, or if you purchase outside that 72-hour window, you’d typically get around 50% back.

One really important thing to understand: cancellation insurance only works for unforeseen, unknown and unexpected events. You can’t buy insurance to protect against something you already know might happen. For example, if your elderly parent is already ill when you book your trip, you can’t later claim cancellation coverage because of their condition. The exception to this rule is the “Cancel for Any Reason” option, which is exactly why it’s so valuable.

This is why we always recommend purchasing insurance when you first book your trip, not weeks or months later.

Trip Interruption Insurance: The Coverage Most People Forget About

Okay, this is the part that often gets overlooked, but it’s just as important as cancellation coverage.

Trip interruption insurance picks up where cancellation insurance leaves off. While cancellation insurance protects you before you leave home, trip interruption insurance protects you from the moment you leave your house until the moment you return home.

Here are some real-world examples of what trip interruption insurance covers:

Getting to the Airport:
You’ve left your house and there’s an accident on the highway. You can’t get to the airport in time for your flight. Trip interruption insurance can help cover the cost of rebooking.

Flight Delays and Cancellations:
The airport delays or cancels your flight. Your insurance can cover meals, hotel accommodations, and transportation you need because of that delay or cancellation.

Rebooking on Another Airline:
Your airline doesn’t have another flight that works with your schedule, and you need to book with a different carrier. That can get expensive fast, but your insurance can cover it.

Missing Part of Your Trip:
If you miss a portion of your cruise or land tour due to delays, you can receive a prorated refund for the part of your trip you lost.

Emergency at Home:
There’s an emergency back home and you need to cut your trip short and get home immediately. Your insurance covers the cost of changing your flights and getting you home.

Without trip interruption coverage, every single one of these expenses comes straight out of your pocket. And trust me, these costs add up quickly. A last-minute flight change alone can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

With trip interruption insurance, you simply keep all your receipts, open a claim when you get home, and submit everything for reimbursement. The coverage limits for each type of expense are quite generous, so you’re well protected.

A Bonus Benefit: Flight Assist

Here’s something really cool that comes with Manulife’s Trip Interruption coverage: Flight Assist. And it’s completely free—just included as part of your policy.

Flight Assist will deposit money immediately into your account if you experience long flight delays. This gives you instant access to funds to help with unexpected expenses like meals, hotels, or transportation while you’re dealing with the delay.

And this is in addition to your regular trip interruption benefits. So you get immediate help when you need it, plus you can still file a claim for reimbursement later. It’s an extra layer of financial protection that can be a real lifesaver when you’re stuck at an airport.

How It All Works Together

Cancellation and Trip Interruption insurance typically come bundled together as one package, which makes it really easy to protect your entire trip from start to finish.

The price of your policy is based on four main factors:

  • The total value of your trip
  • The total length of your trip
  • Your age
  • When applicable, any pre-existing medical conditions

These combined policies also include coverage for lost or delayed baggage, which is another common travel headache that can cost you money.

And if you need emergency out-of-country medical coverage, we can make sure you have the right insurance policy that includes this too. Of course, emergency medical insurance can also be purchased separately if you don’t want or need the cancellation and interruption coverage.

What If I Only Want Interruption Coverage?

We’re glad you asked, because yes, this is an option.

If you don’t want trip cancellation coverage but you are interested in the benefits of interruption insurance, we can set that up for you. We would base the cancellation portion of your trip on zero dollars, but you would still have all the benefits of the trip interruption portion of the policy.

However—and this is really important—if you choose this option and then decide you need to cancel your trip, you would not have any cancellation coverage. You would not be eligible to submit a claim for the cost of your trip because we noted the value as zero when we set up the policy.

So this option works well for people who are comfortable taking the risk on cancellation but want protection once they’re actually traveling.

“But I Have Insurance Through Work…”

We hear this one a lot, and totally understand why people think they’re already covered. It’s great that you’re thinking about what coverage you already have.

Here’s the thing: about 99% of the time, the insurance coverage you get through your employer is emergency out-of-country medical insurance. That’s definitely valuable and important to have, but it doesn’t cover trip cancellation and interruption.

So yes, if you get sick or injured while traveling internationally, your work coverage might help with medical bills. But if you need to cancel your trip before you leave, or if your flight gets cancelled and you need to rebook, or if you lose your luggage, your work insurance won’t help with any of that.

Make sure you actually read through your work policy and understand exactly what is and isn’t covered. You might find that you need both your work coverage and a travel insurance policy to be fully protected.

“My Credit Card Has Travel Insurance…”

This is another common one, and again, we’re glad you’re thinking about it.

Many credit cards do offer some form of travel insurance or protection, but the coverage varies wildly from card to card. Some offer pretty decent coverage, while others offer very limited protection with lots of exclusions and low coverage limits.

If you’re planning to rely on your credit card’s travel insurance, please take the time to really dig into the details. Look at:

  • What specific situations are covered
  • What the dollar limits are for each type of coverage
  • What the exclusions and restrictions are
  • Whether you need to book your entire trip on that card to be covered
  • What the claims process looks like

You can usually find this information on your credit card company’s website, or you can call them directly and ask specific questions.

The reality is that credit card travel insurance is often much more limited than a dedicated travel insurance policy. It might cover some things, but probably not everything you need. And the coverage limits might be lower than the actual cost of your trip.

Not All Insurance Is Created Equal

This is something we really want you to understand: not all insurance policies are the same, and not all coverage is equal.

Different insurance companies offer different benefits, different coverage limits, different exclusions, and different claims processes. Some policies are comprehensive and generous. Others have lots of fine print and restrictions that might leave you without coverage when you need it most.

This is exactly why we are here to help you navigate all of this. We work with reputable insurance providers, we understand the policies inside and out, and can help you choose the coverage that actually makes sense for your specific trip and situation.

Making Insurance Part of Your Travel Budget

Here’s how we encourage you to think about this: you’ve worked hard to earn the money you’re spending on your vacation. You’ve probably been planning and saving for months, maybe even years.

Travel insurance should be factored into your budget right from the start, just like your flights and hotels. It’s not an optional extra—it’s protection for your investment.

Think of it this way: you wouldn’t buy a car without insurance, right? You wouldn’t buy a house without homeowner’s insurance. Your vacation might not cost as much as a car or a house, but it’s still a significant amount of money, and it deserves the same kind of protection.

The peace of mind alone is worth it. Knowing that if something unexpected happens—if you get sick, if there’s a family emergency, if your flight gets cancelled, if your luggage goes missing—you’re covered. You won’t be scrambling to figure out how to pay for everything out of pocket. You won’t lose your entire vacation investment.

You can just focus on handling whatever situation has come up, knowing that the financial piece is taken care of.
